Break the Piggy Bank: Parking Meters Rising This Week

The department is coming, the department is coming!

That would be the city department of transportation and their mission will be costly.

After months of bureaucratic delay, technicians will be adjusting downtown San Pedro parking meters this week to reflect the citywide rate increase enacted last summer.

Rates will go up to $1 an hour or $4 for 10 hours in the long-term lots.

Individual street meters will now run an extra two hours, until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

In the long-term lots, the new hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, including Sunday, with one exception. The meters are not in effect Sundays in the lot at Ninth Street and Pacific Avenue, behind Kragen Auto Parts and the 99¢ Only store.

omg I seen it all they are doing the Sunday thing too wow and I see the times where extended in long term lots wow things suck but i guess it means we should start biking more or walking, it is not hard to do that around San Pedro being it is not a big town.

When in downtown San Pedro, I usually grab a newspaper at Williams bookstore, peruse the magazines, buy something to read, cruise a couple of shops, maybe have lunch.

This week as I weighed the extra $2.00 a 2-hour stay in downtown would cost, I spent a quarter, ran into the bookstore, then high-tailed it up to Weymouth Corners where parking is free, no meters.

City of L.A., the meter rate hike might bring you a bit more income, but it's sure going to hurt all LA businesses, not just in San Pedro. But my behavior in shopping and spending time and money in downtown SP has instantly changed due to this misguided revenue grab.

Grrrr!
