Calm Before the Storm

It’s eerily quiet in newsland for a moment. That won’t be the case on the next two Tuesdays, when high drama is all but ensured. Neighborhood council leaders in San Pedro and citywide are outraged over a proposal to cut council funding by 78 percent. This week’s Daily Breeze story and the commentaries below offer a closer look at the issue. Activists are planning to descend en masse on a May 12 city council committee meeting to argue for their funding. Then, Election Day is May 19. Analysts are warning that the state could run out of money in July if voters reject the ballot measures, as polls are predicting.

As far as the Neighborhood council cuts..........

Maybe they figured one council setting up camp at another councils meetings with a video camera then strutting around the room like a peacock trying their best to disrupt the meeting was just a waste of public funds. Before attacking city hall maybe thank the peacock.

The LACK of leadership from the mayor and City Council who have created this budget deficit with their wasteful spending, pet projects and funneling money to non profits organizations, $24 million of taxpayers, general fund, money toward gang prevention/intervention, non profit, organizations, which retired L.A. County Sergeant Valdemar and gang specialist says it will not work and assists gang members in furthering their organized crime.

With their fiscal responsibility attitude, the mayor and City Council have raised Angelenos trash fees, phone tax, DWP rates, and parking meter fees. These increases do not include L.A. County and State voter approved ballot measures or recent sales tax increases. Also, the mayor implemented the TIGER TEAM enforcement, where 37,000 citations had been issued and 13,000 cars towed since the inception of the TIGER TEAM. The cost for each citation is $140.00 that generated over $5 million dollars as of September 2008. The city receives a towing fee from the 13,000 cars towed, not included in the $5 million.

Where is the fiscal prudence from the mayor or City Council? The mayor should NOT allocate any slush funds, $1,500,000.00 or $100,000.00 per Council district, until the mayor and City Council disclose all their wasteful spending. Yet, the Budget Chair, Council member Bernard Parks, and Council member Greg Smith are placing the lack of fiscal prudence on the backs of the 89 neighborhood councils.

Don’t Be Fooled By The Wolves Dressed In Sheep Clothing!

Vote NO on Propositions 1A through 1E on May 19, 2009.

Prop. 1A will raise taxes on all Californians and extend these taxes for one to two years, taking another $16 billion from you! The already approved tax increase will cost a typical California family $1,100 annually.

HIGHER SALES TAX! Proposition 1A will extend the sales tax hike for an additional full year. California taxpayers already pay the highest sales tax in the nation. This is a direct attack on all working families, especially low-income residents.

HIGHER CAR TAX! Proposition 1A will extend the DOUBLING of the car tax. This affects every California car owner.

HIGHER STATE INCOME TAX! Proposition 1A will extend an income tax increase for two extra years. Californians already pay the highest income tax rates in the nation. Under Prop. 1A, you’ll pay even more.

REDUCTION OF TAX CREDIT FOR DEPENDENTS! Californians with children will see a reduction in the tax credits for dependents, costing them $200 per child. Prop. 1A will extend this attack on families for an extra two years.
The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is urging a vote of "NO" on Prop. 1A, which DOUBLES the tax increase!
