Hahn Calls for Investigation of Biker Picnic

Last Saturday, coastal San Pedro neighborhoods were overwhelmed by motorcyclists roaring to a non-permitted picnic at Joan Milke Flores Park.

As many as 6,000 bikers gathered at the park, revving altered engines, overtaking streets, parking illegally and later becoming rowdy.

Police dispersed the crowd late in the afternoon, but, as the Daily Breeze headline stated, the motorcyclists left a “bad taste” in the community.

Councilwoman Janice Hahn has asked the Los Angeles city attorney to investigate whether the incident constitutes unlawful assembly.

“While people have the right to gather at our parks, when a small party turns into thousands of people, it is clear that we require a permit for a reason,” Hahn said.

The same group gathered at the park in 2005, with the same deafening exit (1 hour of roaring pipes up Gaffey). I called both the LAPD and Councilwoman Hahn's office that day to urge them not to give the group a permit (and not permit) them to gather at the park again. (We had a newborn then who had just gone down for a nap when the noise really kicked in.) So much for listening to constituent messages . . . .

I live around the corner from there, and it was just obnoxious. I am a motorcycle rider myself, but these guys were out of hand. At first, it seemed like a group of Harley riders out with their families and enjoring a BBQ, which was cool. But it got rowdy pretty quickly, and the cops didn't marshal their resources soon enough. I understand there was a related shooting in Harbor City a few hours later, after the cops broke up the San Pedro gathering. Niiiice. San Pedro should not be allowed to become the gathering place for the trash of LA. Let's have some pride, people.

It’s estimated that 100-300 people will participate in the Saving LA Protest. I’m wishing all concerned Angelenos will take this day off and take a stance in taking back LA from these politicians, who in my opinion are only concerned about special interest groups, campaign contributions, and taxing constituents.
